A Full House for Twinning Dinner!

On Saturday 12th November we held our first annual dinner.  We had a great evening at The Crown in Tarporley with a full house of 65 attending; many were longstanding twinners and we also welcomed some new faces to our French-themed meal.
At the same time in Bohars our friends were dining on fish and chips. There was a Skype video link between the two dinners throughout the events, although the technology didn’t always work quite as well as we’d hoped.  Sometimes we could see them or hear them, sometimes not.
After the dinner we were entertained by an auction of unusual lots, including numerous specially-made chocolate hedgehogs.  Auctioneer Andrew Wallace managed to keep track of bids in both English and French!  David Dunning accepted some mysterious bids over the phone.
Many thanks to all the people who played a part in making Saturday a success!

Tarporley’s French Connection – Meal and Auction

Our friends in Bohars are holding a Fish & Chip supper on Saturday the 12th of November and we are planning to enjoy a fantastic French meal at the Crown Hotel in Tarporley at the same time; hopefully with a live video link between the two events.  After the meal we will be holding an auction of delicious chocolate hedgehogs as well as other exciting paraphenalia and lots that money can’t buy!

Everyone in Tarporley and our surrounding villages is invited to the Twinning Association Autumn Meal & Auction.

It’s on Saturday November 12th 7:15pm at The Crown Hotel, Tarporley.

Tickets for the dinner cost £15 each and include a three course meal, a glass of wine and coffee.  The starter will be a choice of soup or pate, The main course options are:

Coq au Vin

Boeuf Bourguignonne

Tarte aux légumes (vegetarian)

And we’ll end up with a choice of Tarte au Citron or Crêpes!

During the meal we hope there’ll be a live video link to the annual Fish & Chip supper in our twin town of Bohars!

Tickets are available from the Crown Hotel and from Twinning committee members.

Plus after the meal an auction… of chocolate hedgehogs and other paraphenalia that you cannot buy in the shops! Auction starts around 9pm Free entry to the auction! Auctioneer: Mr Andrew Wallace

This year even more than the usual number of families would like their children to visit Tarporley – the week beginning 20th August.

So at the moment we are particularly looking for extra families to host children coming over from Bohars for that week.  If you would like to get involved and host a youngster (ages 12 to 16) in August then please get in touch via the website or phone David Dunning on 01829 781426.

There are prearranged activities for the children every day so your involvement is mostly to provide bed and breakfast and help them improve their English!

Next summer (2017) Tarporley children will be off to Bohars around the same time.

The Benefits of Twinning

Clemence started out visiting us from Bohars as a youngster and has found longer-term benefits.  David Dunning takes up the story:

“Clement came to Tarporley on his first exchange as a 12 year old with his older brother. He couldn’t wait to use his pocket money on the fruit machines at Alton Towers and spent it all, ammassing about 20 cheap lighters. On his next visit 2 years later the money all went in Liverpool football club’s shop.

I had got to know his parents quite well, and when I told them what was hapenning, they simply said that he would learn. Well, he did, got good school results, and was studying a chemistry-based subject at university.

However, when he needed a placement for 10 weeks, he couldn’t find one in France.  So he used the confidence he had got from Twinning, and found a 10 week placement working in the chemistry laboratory in Liverpool University, and has landed on his feet getting offers to stay long term in luxury appartments where Liverpool footballers live and, more to the point, getting job offers with multi-national companies.

I feel sure this is just the beginning, but what a start Twinning gave him.”
